Charlbury Town Walking Football

Rediscover the 'Beautiful Game' in a welcoming environment

Stay active, build friendships and have fun with likeminded individuals

No experience needed - No pressure - No judgement - Just walking football, friendship, and coffee.

Regular casual sessions at the Charlbury Community Centre on Wednesday afternoons between 15:00 - 17:00 and on Thursday evenings between 20:00 - 21:00

For those wanting to be a little more competitive, we also play in the Oxfordshire Walking Football League at 60+, 65+ and 70+ age level and have even been known to take part in tournaments in the UK and Europe - but only for fun!

What Is Walking Football?

No sprinting - No running - and don't even think about jogging!

Walking Football is exactly as the name suggests - you play football, at walking pace

Usually aimed at people over 50, this inclusive, fun and sociable version of the game is slow-paced but lacks none of the passion or excitement of the original game

Whether you're looking to keep active, stay fit, or simply want to play for the love of the game, Walking Football offers the perfect opportunity to take to the pitch

As well as the health benefits associated with most forms of physical activity; keeping fit and active, weight loss etc., there are also many social health benefits that come with playing Walking Football

Taking time to socialise, meet new people or even build confidence are all part and parcel of taking part in this slower version of the beautiful game

Snickers Just Play Scheme

When you fancy a game...Just Play!

If you just want to play walking football casually, now you can Just Play at Charlbury Community Centre. There’s no need to join a team, play in a league or commit to regular training. Just turn up for a game. We provide the pitch, balls, bibs and teams and a Just Play Organiser looks after the session.

If you aren’t quite ready to join in and play, just come and watch the next session. No registration needed, just turn up and come and say hello.

We will be happy to answer any questions you may have, and you can then decide if you would like to register for a future session and join in.

The Rules

Sadly, there isn't a universally accepted set of rules currently in force.

At Charlbury Walking Football we adhere to the

FA Walking Football Laws Of The Game

Key to our sessions though is an understanding that physical contact is avoided and walking is a 'must'!

Walking Football in Action

After our Wednesday sessions, many of players stay for a mug of tea or coffee at the Centre's Cafe and a chance to have a good chat about things...

We have also been known to organise the odd pub visit and Christmas meal out!

It's Also Sociable...

"Growing up with three brothers, I always played football at home but there weren't any other opportunities at the time. So, at the age of 56, I contacted Charlbury who were most encouraging. The gents at CTWF were really welcoming and helpful - AND we have a cuppa afterwards and share friendly banter.

If I don't play on a Wednesday my week is lacking something very special for me!"

What our players have to say.......

"Wanted to try walking football and heard they played at Charlbury, so went along and had a warm welcome, really enjoyed it and have been playing regularly now for some time."

John D

"A welcoming, friendly and patient group, who love their football and then the banter over a post match cup of tea!"

"I have never been a sports fan, not even an armchair one (well maybe World Cup & Six Nations) and know absolutely nothing about football. It was quite intriguing to hear a friend talking about walking football so at the age of 80, I decided to investigate. I liked what I saw and joined in.

One aspect of football that I quickly learned was not to stand in the way of the ball when it had been kicked!

However, the power of my own kick is such that the goalie only has to look at the ball and it stops.

Nevertheless I really enjoy the exercise and find my fellow players very encouraging."
